For years, books like Life 3.0 and The Singularity Is Near had painted visions of a future reshaped by AI – but for the first time, that future no longer felt theoretical. It was tangible. Immediate. Personal. The leap from GPT-2 was staggering. The timeline had collapsed.

I was obsessed. Conversations with friends inevitably circled back to AI. Its possibilities. Its volatility. How it might rewire economies, redefine creativity, and even reshape the very core of human identity. What began as curiosity quickly turned into something deeper: an uneasy sense that we were living through a transformation far bigger than almost anyone realized.

Then, in late 2022, ChatGPT hit the public consciousness – and the stakes became impossible to ignore. The pace of change accelerated, and the ripple effects began to spread. Suddenly, everyone was paying attention. The world had stepped into the next phase, ready or not.

The scale of opportunity was unlike anything I had seen. The energy was magnetic – a gold rush pulling in talent from every direction. AI was evolving too fast for institutions to control and too accessible for innovation to stay centralized. A Cambrian explosion of startups felt inevitable. Many of the most interesting breakthroughs would come from the edges – spiky builders who lived and breathed the technology, moving fast and chasing tacit knowledge no playbook could capture. The most valuable insights were not being documented – they would only exist in the scattered collective consciousness of those experimenting in real time.

We had to start thinking collectively.

So I sent a few texts. A handful of us – founders, engineers, researchers, and investors – first gathered one evening in a cozy San Francisco apartment. No decks. No panels. No official plan. Just people around a table, trying to understand something that felt massive and uncertain.

The atmosphere was electric – loose, chaotic, and alive. Ideas flew in every direction. We interrupted each other, circled back, layered insights on top of half-finished thoughts. Our next event exploded. What we expected to be another intimate discussion turned into a tidal wave of interest. Over 250 people signed up. We had no brand, no marketing – just momentum. It was undeniable.

And the people who showed up weren't passive observers. We were builders. Researchers. Operators. People immersed in the work – grappling with the same questions, chasing insights that couldn't be uncovered in isolation. We weren't coming for formalities or curated content. We were coming for each other. To challenge assumptions, cross-pollinate ideas, and expand the adjacent possible – that space of unrealized potential that only emerges when the right minds collide at the right moment.

We leaned in, hard. For 40 straight weeks, we gathered. No profit, no paid team – just an unwavering rhythm of curiosity, contribution, and connection. Late-night debates, deep dives, workshops, even hackathons. Every gathering was a testbed – an opportunity to pressure-test ideas, tighten formats, and strengthen the signal. Every week, new faces walked through the door. Every week, familiar ones returned.

At first, we hesitated. Could the energy we'd built in San Francisco exist anywhere else? Could it carry across cities, cultures, time zones? But the requests kept coming. And deep down, we knew: it wasn't just possible. It was inevitable.

Because what we had tapped into wasn't bound to a city – it was something much bigger. A shared hunger. The same forces pulling us together in San Francisco were playing out everywhere.

We started close to home – new chapters across the Bay, led by people who understood the spark because they had felt it firsthand. Then, we made our first big jump: New York City. It was exhilarating. Unpredictable. But the moment we saw a room full of founders, researchers, and operators all locked in deep discussion we knew this was just the beginning.

Boston followed. Then Miami. Then Paris. One after another, chapters emerged – each led by leaders who felt the same pull that we did on that very first night. The same realization that AI wasn't going to be shaped from the top down – it was going to emerge from the people pushing its limits in real time.

None of this was easy. We had little to no budget for these events. We were flying city to city, running on fumes and adrenaline, just to ensure that each new chapter had the foundation it needed to thrive. Each launch taught us something new – about what resonated, what translated, and what made every event feel like an extension of the original spark we had in San Francisco.

And even as we grew – city by city, week by week – the spirit behind it all never faded. If anything, it crystalized. Hardened by the friction. Strengthened by the effort. Sustained by a relentless pursuit of something bigger than ourselves.

What began as a dozen people gathered in a cozy San Francisco apartment has become something far greater than any of us imagined. From a single conversation, an ecosystem of connection, support, and accelerated innovation has taken shape – one that is deeply local, profoundly personal, and built on trust.

More than any technology before it, AI is being built outside the center. Not just in the halls of the largest institutions, but by a global network of pioneers who live on the frontier and move fast in pursuit of what's next. The breakthroughs that matter most don't emerge from isolation – they emerge from collective wisdom, knowledge spillover, and the force of a connected community accelerating each other's progress in ways no single institution could.

That's what the GenAI Collective has become: a nexus and a force multiplier for innovation.

Every week, in cities around the world, hundreds of pioneers gather through the Collective – in living rooms and lecture halls, at hackathons and demo nights, through intimate salons and research roundtables. Across cities and formats, our gatherings operate like innovation engines – where cutting-edge ideas are stress-tested, knowledge flows freely, and real momentum is built shoulder-to-shoulder. Whether it's a founder sharing a prototype, a researcher presenting a frontier insight, or a room full of peers offering real-time feedback and support via our demo night app – our community doesn‘t just witness innovation; it surrounds it. That's why the Bay Area became the global heart of innovation: it created the conditions for closeness to scale. But those conditions shouldn't be exclusive. We believe every city, every pioneer, every problem-solver deserves access to that same spark. And we're making it happen.

In just over a year, the GenAI Collective has grown into a global network of 70,000+ founders, researchers, investors, and operators, drawn together by a shared purpose and a hunger to stay ahead. We've hosted 200+ events across 25+ cities, each one designed to tighten the feedback loop, cross-pollinate ideas, and push the field forward. We've formed partnerships with 40+ leading organizations like Meta, a16z, Product Hunt, and The Linux Foundation. And we've been powered by a team of 100+ volunteer organizers – the beating heart of this movement – who show up week after week to dedicate their time, energy, and vision to building what didn't exist before.

And if that were all we ever built – a trusted, global network of people accelerating each other's progress through meaningful connection and shared values – it would still be a monumental achievement. Our demo nights alone would be worth it. The value would ripple across companies, careers, and entire ecosystems. Founders would ship better products. Researchers would discover faster. It's tempting to find someone to blame. But I think it's very wrong to view companies or institutions as evil. The reality is more uncomfortable: they are operating in systems that haven't been meaningfully upgraded for the world we're entering. And they're serving a public that – through no fault of their own – hasn't been equipped to understand or navigate the world that's coming.

That doesn't absolve anyone of responsibility. If anything, it heightens it.

Because when trust disappears, confusion spreads. And in that confusion, the risk of chaos grows. Pressure builds. Decisions are made in haste. And attempts to right the ship – however well-intentioned – often carry unintended consequences. They feel urgent in the moment, but leave damage in their wake.

We've seen it before.

Nuclear energy could have catalyzed a new era of clean abundance. But it was rolled out without transparency or public trust. When confidence collapsed, regulation overcorrected – and we lost fifty years of progress.

Social media was meant to connect us, but the underlying incentives – attention over nuance, outrage over truth – distorted that promise, creating division and polarization. We didn't just fail to predict the consequences – we failed to act. And in that failure, we lost public trust.

Now, AI stands at a similar inflection point.

The decisions being made today will shape the trajectory of civilization. Yet too often, they happen without context, without broad participation, and without the systems in place to absorb complexity or correct course.

As progress accelerates, echo chambers tighten. Assumptions go unchallenged. Short-term incentives dominate. And the public grows more anxious, as the space for nuance shrinks and the risks – technical, societal, political – grow larger by the day.

And amid all this, the conversation around AI has collapsed into a false dichotomy: accelerate blindly or halt everything in fear.

That framing is a failure of imagination.

A belief that we can bring our institutions with us – not by tearing them down, but by helping them evolve. That progress and responsibility go hand in hand. Because no matter how powerful the tools we create, if the systems around them fracture, we all lose.

This is the challenge of our time. This is not just a moral necessity. It is a personal imperative.

At the heart of this global expansion is our new flagship gathering: Singularity Fest.

Singularity Fest is not a traditional AI conference – it's a multiday convergence of pioneers across domains. A working forum where builders, visionaries, and problem-solvers come together to explore every dimension of AI's impact – from the deeply technical to the societal, the philosophical, and the human. It's where the conversations that matter most happen face-to-face, among the people doing the work. Less spectacle, more substance. A place to compare notes, challenge assumptions, and push the field forward together.

Informing Stakeholders and Equipping Decision-Makers

As AI accelerates, the gap between those building the future and those tasked with guiding it is widening. Insight is siloed. Institutions are underinformed. And critical decisions are being made without access to the people and knowledge that matter most.

The AI Collective Institute exists to bridge that divide. It focuses on working with those tasked with shaping policy and societal understanding.

It's a new kind of research initiative – practical, participatory, and grounded in the real-time insights of those on the frontier. Through open research, structured collaboration, and ongoing engagement with leaders across sectors, the Institute will translate raw experience into clear, actionable guidance – for companies shaping products, for policymakers shaping regulation, and for a public trying to make sense of it all. It ensures the wisdom emerging from the community informs the systems that guide us.

Supporting Mission-Aligned Innovation

Our community is teeming with founders building the future – products, services, and entire companies poised to reshape industries and tackle immense challenges. We see incredible potential emerge week after week at demo nights and in countless conversations. But vision alone isn't enough; bringing world-changing ideas to fruition requires resources and support.

To ensure the most promising and purpose-driven ideas born from our community make it into the world, we are launching Collective Investments – focused on directly supporting the builders creating mission-aligned ventures.

Crucially, this is not a venture fund. Operating under our non-profit umbrella, Collective Investments is a dedicated service designed to facilitate connections between mission-aligned founders within our community and values-aligned capital providers (VCs, grants, angels). Think of it as taking our demo nights to the next level – creating structured pathways for opportunity.

We leverage the trust and insight unique to our ecosystem to identify founders whose work embodies the principles of responsible innovation and positive human impact central to The AI Collective's purpose. We then actively help bridge the gap to the resources they need. Unlike traditional funds, our non-profit status allows us to focus purely on alignment and potential positive impact, helping founders navigate the critical "other 99%" of the startup journey beyond just the initial idea. We exist to serve these founders and ensure the AI future being built reflects the values we champion.

With a growing global network and a first-of-its-kind research initiative, we are ensuring that AI's builders, adopters, and decision-makers have the connections, knowledge, and influence to help steer its progress – together.

I still think back to that first gathering.

A small room. A dozen of us, drawn together by curiosity, by conviction, by the unmistakable sense that history was speeding up – and we had just stepped into the slipstream. There was no agenda.
